Harper's Weekly Article February 1, 1862This Month in the Civil War: Taxes always go up. In the February 1, 1862 edition of Harper’s Weekly Congress voted to “tax the people, directly and indirectly, to the amount of $150,000,000 annually.” The article focuses how the government can borrow money to fund the ongoing war. Nothing new here as we all know. The person behind the finances of the federal government of President Lincoln was Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of the Treasury. In case you don’t know who Salmon P. Chase is look in your wallet for a $10,000 dollar bill, don’t have one take a look at this currency web site*. He was an ardent abolitionist who started his political career as a congressman and ended up as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court*.
